Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Elisabeth Kübler Ross (Zúrich,8 de julio de 1926 - Scottsdale, Arizona, 24 de agosto de 2004). Psiquiatra suizo-estadounidense, una de las mayores expertas mundiales en la muerte, los moribundos y los cuidados paliativos. Médica psiquiatra suiza, autora de On Death and Dying (1969), donde expone su conocido modelo de Kübler-Ross por primera vez. En esa y otras doce obras, sentó las bases de los modernos cuidados paliativos, cuyo objetivo es que el enfermo afronte la muerte con serenidad y hasta con alegría.

Se licenció en medicina en la Universität Zürich en 1957 y en 1958, se mudó a Nueva York, donde continuó sus investigaciones.

Empezó como residente con pacientes a punto de morir y más tarde fue dando conferencias sobre el tratamiento de moribundos. Toda su obra versa sobre la muerte y el acto de morir y va describiendo diferentes fases del enfermo según va llegando su muerte (modelo Kübler-Ross: negación, ira, negociación, depresión y aceptación).

No participó en el movimiento de cuidados paliativos, aunque sus compañeros la animaran. Se graduó en psiquiatría en la University of Colorado en 1963 y recibió 23 doctorados honoríficos.

Elisabeth ayudó a muchos familiares a manejar su pérdida, a saber cómo enfrentarse a la muerte de un ser querido, les explicó cómo apoyar al moribundo, lo que debía hacerse en esos difíciles momentos y lo que debía evitarse. Bajo su tutela se crearon fundaciones y movimientos ciudadanos que reclamaban el derecho a una muerte digna. Y comenzaron a publicarse libros, gracias a los cuales miles de familias recibieron consuelo.

Sufrió varios ataques de apoplejía en 1995 que le paralizaron el lado izquierdo. En una entrevista de 2002 con The Arizona Republic, decía que estaba preparada para morir.

Finalmente, la doctora Kübler-Ross falleció el día 24 de agosto de 2004
